UIT Information Security Students Conquer All Challenges at the Flare-On 12 Global Reverse Engineering Competition

The Flare-On 12 Challenge, one of the world’s most prestigious reverse engineering competitions, officially concluded after four intense weeks of competition, attracting 4,139 registered participants from across the globe. Among them, only 273 outstanding contestants successfully completed all 9 challenges — making this year’s edition widely recognized as one of the most difficult and memorable seasons in Flare-On history.

Vietnam once again asserted its strong presence with 27 finishers, proudly joining the global “winner’s circle.” Even more impressively, the University of Information Technology, VNU-HCMC (UIT) made a remarkable mark with five Information Security students who successfully conquered all challenges, completing the entire Flare-On 12 season.

Outstanding Achievements by UIT Students at Flare-On 12

Leading the UIT contingent, Nguyen Duc Hieu (Peter clowncs) – a 2023 regular Information Security student – completed all 9 challenges in just 3 days, 15 hours, and 47 minutes, ranking 12th globally.

In addition, four other UIT students also proudly earned their spots among the world’s finishers:

  • Bui Huu Tung (fuyosuru) – 2023 Talented Program, ranked 104th, completed in 15 days, 17 hours, 20 minutes.

  • Tran Hieu (H1uTr3n) – 2023 Talented Program, ranked 135th, completed in 19 days, 15 hours, 23 minutes.

  • Dinh Le Thanh Cong (dltcong) – 2022 Talented Program, ranked 195th, completed in 24 days, 5 hours, 50 minutes.

  • Nguyen Trong Nhan (suachuakhduong) – 2024 Talented Program, ranked 299th, completed in 28 days, 14 hours, 12 minutes.

The achievements of these UIT students not only demonstrate their technical excellence and perseverance in a highly competitive international environment but also contribute to elevating Vietnam’s image in the global technology arena.

Their impressive success once again highlights UIT’s pivotal role in fostering a practical, innovative, and research-oriented learning environment. About the Flare-On Challenge

The Flare-On Challenge is an annual international competition organized by the FLARE team, dedicated to reverse engineering enthusiasts worldwide. The 12th season featured nine meticulously designed challenges, crafted by world-leading experts in cybersecurity and malware analysis. Participants not only sharpen their technical skills through each round but also gain exposure to new methods and tools in reverse engineering.

Through multiple seasons, UIT students have consistently proven their capability and competitive spirit, earning recognition on the global leaderboard and further solidifying the university’s reputation as a leading institution in cybersecurity education and research.

I. Eligibility:

Students admitted to the articulation program with the University of Newcastle (UoN) at the University of Information Technology (UIT) for the 2025 intake.

II. Scholarship Details:

2.1. Academic Merit Scholarships for Officially Admitted Students

These scholarships are awarded based on the national high school graduation exam (THPTQG) scores.

III. Important Notes:

  1. Scholarships in section 2.1 are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis upon completion of admission procedures, subject to quota availability.

  2. The Early Registration Scholarship (section 2.2) is contingent upon the student obtaining an English language certificate equivalent to IELTS 5.5 within 04 months from the date of enrollment confirmation. The scholarship becomes void if this condition is not met within the stipulated period.

  3. The Semester-based Academic Excellence Scholarships (section 2.3) are awarded for the first four semesters only, provided students maintain the standard academic progression of the program.

  4. Only the following English language certificates, valid for two years from the date of issue, are accepted for scholarship consideration:

    • IELTS Academic

    • PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) – Note: PTE Academic Online is not accepted.

    • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) – Note: The Home Edition is not accepted.

    • Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced (CAE), C2 Proficiency (CPE)

    • VSTEP – Note: VSTEP Level 4 (score of 7.0 or above) is considered equivalent to IELTS 5.5.

IV. Application Procedure:

  • For Academic Merit Scholarships (2.1):

    • Eligible students must apply using the University's official scholarship application form.

    • Application period: From the announcement date until October 15, 2025.

  • For the Early Registration Scholarship (2.2):
    Application dossier must include:

    • Completed scholarship application form (using the University's template): https://link.uit.edu.vn/maudonhbUoN

    • Receipt confirming submission of enrollment documents.

    • Receipt confirming registration for the English enhancement course.

  • For Semester-based Academic Excellence Scholarships (2.3):

    • Awarded automatically by the University at the beginning of each semester, commencing from the second semester. Selection is based on the academic results of the immediately preceding semester (e.g., the scholarship for Semester 2 is awarded at the start of Semester 3 after all Semester 2 grades are finalized).

    • Students are not required to submit an application.

  • The bank account provided for scholarship disbursement must be under the student's own name.

Four academic programs at the University of Information Technology (UIT) have officially been accredited by ASIIN! Specifically, the accredited programs include:

From November 13-14, 2024, the ASIIN accreditation team (The Accreditation Agency for Study Programmes in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences, and Mathematics) conducted a comprehensive assessment and evaluation of these four programs through numerous interviews and discussions with stakeholders.

ASIIN is a prestigious accreditation body in Europe that ensures academic programs meet the high standards of the global labor market. The ASIIN experts highly appreciated the quality of education at UIT and suggested improvements to further enhance the curriculum. ASIIN’s accreditation is internationally recognized and guarantees the quality of higher education worldwide. This organization evaluates academic programs in various aspects, including learning outcomes, curriculum framework, faculty, facilities, quality assurance processes, and the collaboration between universities, students, and businesses.
